I must be really old! I can remember the silver threepenny bits. My brother used to get them in his wages and he always gave them to me. I also have never heard them referred to as Joey.
  • Prasutagus said on 14-Jun-2012, 4 years ago
True, but the name continued as a result of habit and, as a kid, we still learned about the "Thruppenny Joey" having never seen a silver 3d, or appreciated that they even existed!
  • jacksnharvey said on 14-Jun-2012, 4 years ago
Couldn't resist this:- Mary had a metal cow She milked it with a spanner The milk came out in shilling tins With small ones for a tanner...........BoomBoom Actu ally, that wasn't a joey, they were the forerunner of the 3d bit made of silver.

So whatever happened to ejerkatshun? To think, we pensioners left our futures in the hands of your generation when you never even learned about proper money! Have to be honest though, the coins were soooo big compared with today's, that the rag trade made a bomb out of iron-on pocket repairs for trousers - nothing wore through a gent's trouser pocket faster than "small change" - today you hardly ever see iron-pocket repair kits for sale!
  • moominpapa said on 13-Jun-2012, 4 years ago
It's finally happened the pensioners have taken over the world ! lol..too hard for me Prag..was born just as we changed..

Oh dear. Just came in at the crossover to decimalisation, so thought I might remember more than I did. Good one though :)

At last - a quiz where being ancient helps! Thanks for the memories.

Excellent quiz but, ashamedly, I went through it without really thinking (or not re-calling) the proper answer due to being in the middle of an ad break while watching 24 hours in A & E (Ep.2) online. I only have so many hours in the day to do everything so ......... :P Well done again Prasutagus! X Sue

  • jacksnharvey said on 13-Jun-2012, 4 years ago
I've just done it again without logging in. I'm sure no.9 was the iffy one but it's obviously been corrected now coz I put the same answer & scored 100.
  • Prasutagus said on 13-Jun-2012, 4 years ago
Well done jacks. Would that iffy question be about the value of the crown? The quiz is about pre-decimal coins which came in around 1971 when the value of the crown was as per the quiz. In 1990 it was revalued due to the effects of inflation which meant that the coin would would have cost more than its actual metal value to mint, so it then became £5 and it is eventually likely to replace the very popular note.

    Great quiz.

Yet another brilliant quiz & clever idea. Things are so much easier with decimalisation. There was one iffy answer but can't remember which one.
