What is considered relatively recently? The Webster's American dictionary is from the year 1984 which includes both spellings and the Oxford American dictionary is from the year 2000 which also includes both spellings. Also, this is the way I learned to spell that word when I went to school in the '60's and 70's. This is the reason why I originally looked it up; due to the fact that this is the way I learned to spell the word, with two t's.

To Traxton! By the way, I just looked up the word again in the Webster's dictionary and we are both correct. It could be spelled either way, either with one "t" or two t's.

To Traxton, You are incorrect!!! I looked up the word in the Webster's dictionary and also in the Oxford American dictionary and the word is spelled with two t's. Are you by any chance from Britain? Maybe in Britain the spelling is different.

No wonder I was always picked last for the netball team.......
  • Sumsum said on 25-May-2012, 4 years ago
The first question on spelling is incorrect. The correct spelling is "benefitted" with two "t's", not one. Without the "ed" at the end, the correct spelling is "benefit" with one "t" but when the "ed" is added then there are two "t's".
