Welcome Rosie, no need to apologise (except for mooms), we were all new to the site at sometime or other and know what it's like. Did you know moominpapa is a builder but clicked 'Porche' for the doorway one? Claims he was distracted while leaning on his shovel!

Welcome Rosyapple..you'll soon get used to it..some nice people on here too..watch out for Jacksnharvey and Prasutagus tho..

Did you know why gargle is called that ? It's because of the gurgling noise gargoyles make when the rain's *eeing down through their open mouths (like now). They were also believed to ward off evil goulies. Just thought I'd drop that in, me being full of useless information.

I still can't believe moominpapa chose "Botumbit" for the base of a column!
  • Prasutagus said on 30-Aug-2012, 4 years ago
Yes Rosyapple, see my earlier comment - in the days before guttering, downpipes and drainage systems they generally had long 'necks' or 'snouts' to keep rainwater off the walls, so had more than a decorative purpose. As for your new found knowledge, bol, impress people when you next visit a stately home, church or cathedral - alternatively you could just understand what they're talking about on Time Team!

Changed my mind on one (springer) - bad idea, as I would have got full marks. Good quiz.

My knowledge has been enhanced Prag. Now what can I do with this new found wisdom.................

I thought a weid face thing on a wall was a gargoyle or is that something different?
  • BarkingMad said on 29-Aug-2012, 4 years ago
    Good one!

Good concept, some of the "wrong" answers gave me a good chuckle!! Well done!!
  • Prasutagus said on 29-Aug-2012, 4 years ago
LMAO Mooms, and you a builder letting jacks beat you your score! Jacks, that's the granny-annex, not the house. bolox - gargoyles were originally based on real or mythical animals, though they sometimes portrayed human faces too. They were used to discharge rainwater away from the building to stop it running down and soaking the walls and were only more recently used for decoration.

I thought the last was a gargoyle too. Spent many a concert looking at the roof of York Minster (whilst listening to the soloists) .
  • bolox said on 29-Aug-2012, 4 years ago
Prag: pray tell; what is a gargoyle then.

Interesting tour of your house Prag. Nice pics, slipped up on the "doggy" one, should be a giveaway to Mooms.
